Richard A. Viguerie
Speech to
Conservative Leadership Conference
Tuscany Suites and Casino
Las Vegas, Nevada
September 20, 2008
First, I want to
express my great thanks and appreciation to all of
you Cranky Conservatives out there…
What and Who’s a
Cranky Conservative?
You’re a Cranky
Conservative if you refused to give money to the GOP
the last few years when they abandoned their
principles and acted like Democrats.
You’re a Cranky
Conservative if you expressed great disappointment
even anger at the Big Government, Big Spending
Republicans.
You’re a Cranky
Conservative if you were undecided about who you
were going to vote for in this election or if you
were thinking about not voting because of the
betrayal of the Republican leaders.
You’re a Cranky
Conservative if you withheld your support and
refused to volunteer until you saw who John McCain
was going to select for his Vice Presidential
running mate.
And conservatives are
deeply in the debt of the bloggers, conservative
talk show hosts, religious right leaders and other
conservatives who went nuclear in July and August
when John McCain personally, as well as his key
campaign team openly entertained the possibility of
appointing a liberal, pro-abortion Republican or
Democrat as his running mate.
These Cranky
Conservatives are also heroes of the conservative
movement and they may end up saving America from a
President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.
Today, Governor Sarah
Palin, a principled young conservative is the
Republican nominee for Vice President with a strong
chance to be a future President of the United States
because of the Cranky Conservatives in this room and
the millions of others around the country.
Some people question
John McCain’s health – Well one thing we know about
his health is that his hearing works very well.
And while I’m talking
about cranky conservatives – guess who’s the number
one Cranky Conservative in America…..
It’s none other than
Governor Sarah Palin.
John McCain selected
her because she was a principled conservative who
would not stay silent and go along to get along.
She refused to be
part of the good ole boy Republican network
a. She resigned as Chair of the Alaska Oil
and Gas Conservation Commission
protesting the lack
of ethics of her fellow Republican members
She then filed a
formal complaint against a member of the Commission
and the
Chairman of the State
Republican Party causing him to resign and pay a
fine.
She also filed a
complaint against a former Republican Alaskan
Attorney General
causing him to also
resign from the Commission.
B. She
challenged the incumbent Republican Governor of
Alaska in a
Republican primary –
he got 19% of the Republican vote.
C. This year
she endorsed a Republican who was challenging the
big
government, big
spending Republican Congressman from Alaska,
Don Young.
Over and over she
stood up to the good ole boy Republican, go along to
get along, big spending, big government network.
And time after time
she beat them.
Take notice
establishment, big spending, country club
Republicans—a new day is dawning
You’ve lied and
betrayed the voters and it’s long past time for you
to go.
In the next few years
there’s going to be many more young, principled
Sarah Palin types who are going to challenge you in
primaries and party offices at the local, state, and
national levels.
And a message to
Republican politicians: It’s Sarah Palin’s
principles, stupid!
Republicans won’t be
able to ‘hold onto Palin’s skirt’ unless they
campaign on her ideas
With the popularity
of Governor Sarah Palin providing lift to the GOP
ticket, Republicans are starting to feel better
about races for Congress and at the state level. But
most of them are missing the point of her popularity
and may be personally disappointed on Election Day.
Too many Republican
candidates think Governor Palin is popular because
of her gender or because she’s a fresh face with a
‘cool’ life story. They think they can hold onto her
skirt and that her popularity will help carry them
to victory.
The truth is, ‘It’s
Palin’s principles, stupid!’ It’s what she
represents, as a reformer fighting corruption, even
in her own party. It’s because you can believe her
when she says she will wage war on the corrupt
Washington establishment. That’s not something you
can say about most Republican politicians, who stood
by throughout their careers doing precisely nothing
about the culture of corruption that infests
Washington and politics in general.
And she’s popular
because she appears to hold to the core beliefs of
the coalition that elected Ronald Reagan in two
landslides--on taxes, spending, the role of
government, and traditional ideas of right and
wrong.
The popularity of
Palin--and the heightened popularity of John McCain,
who selected her as his political soul mate--won’t
help other Republicans unless they also hold to
those principles and campaign credibly on those
principles.
Governor Palin’s
V.P. nomination is HUGE.
She’s just one
person, but it’s not too much to say that, for at
least the next twenty years, she has the potential
to change the direction of:
the
conservative movement
the
Republican Party
and
America
And you know who also
believes Sara Palin’s selection is HUGE and could
change everything—the liberals. You can tell this by
their vitriol.
If Governor Palin
becomes Vice President Palin next January, she will
instantly become the most powerful woman in the
world.
She puts the Left in
a tizzy because she may inspire and lead the
Republican party to a return to its conservative
principles.
She will be a major
role model for tens of millions of women who have
not voted or voted Democratic or were independents,
leading many to join the GOP.
She will inspire
thousands of mostly young people to run for party or
public office committed to changing the corrupt ways
of city, county, state and Federal governments.
Vice President, then
President Sarah Palin would usher in a generation of
conservative government reversing and ending many of
the liberals gains of the last 50 years.
Liberals know she’s a
potential world-class game changer, and they can’t
control themselves. We conservatives know how the
Left spews its venom. One person, though, has
managed to expose the Left’s hypocrisy and hatred
for the entire world to see.
The liberals full
court press to defeat her and McCain reminds me of
the liberals shameful campaign 21 years ago to keep
Judge Robert Bork off the Supreme Court.
The left knew Judge
Bork was a game changer—they knew he was far more
than one vote. Because of his intellect, he would
move the court and the country to the right.
The left spared
nothing in their battle to keep Judge Bork off the
Supreme Court and it’s obvious they will do whatever
it takes—spend as much money as needed—to keep this
lady from coming to Washington, D.C. and reversing
their march toward a socialist America.
By the way – I
predict that John McCain and Sarah Palin will win in
a landslide with over 55% of the popular vote and
over 60% of the Electoral College vote.
And this victory will
mark the beginning of a new era of conservative
leadership for America led mostly by younger,
principled conservatives.
We’ll be led by
younger, principled conservatives because most
conservative leaders and most Republican leaders
have failed us.
America’s future
leaders will be people like Sarah Palin, Bobby
Jindal, Mark Sandford, Jim DeMint, Mike Pence, Paul
Ryan, Tony Perkins, Chuck Muth and many, many
others.
Conservatives and
Republicans need new principled leaders who will go
off defense and go on offense. Sarah
Palin is just the beginning of a new breed of
leaders who come from outside Washington, and who
know that Washington is the problem.
Americans are
troubled and America is in trouble,
domestically and around the globe.
We need mostly new
and younger conservative leaders because more than
any time in memory, most of the leaders of America’s
major institutions have failed us, many have lied to
us, and some have betrayed us.
And the people know
it.
- 82% of Americans believe the country is going in
the wrong direction
66% disapprove of
President Bush’s performance
9% approve of
Congress
86% believe the
news media try to influence public opinion…
while fewer than
20% believe most or all news media reporting
Never in the history
of America have our leaders failed us in so many big
ways:
- The mortgage
lending crisis
America being
dependent on the likes of the Saudi royal family and
Hugo Chavez for our energy supplies, which transfers
hundreds of billions of dollars yearly to America’s
enemies
Over 59 trillion
dollars of unfunded debt
Political
programs such as ethanol – enriching a few while
raising the price of food for all, causing
starvation in many parts of the world and harming
the environment in the name of protecting it
Judges who
legislate from the bench and issue decisions
according to their personal likes and dislikes
thereby ignoring the Constitution
Politicians,
judges and bureaucrats
who ride roughshod over the rights of Americans by
ignoring the Constitution – remember the Kelo
decision
Wars without end
and wars fought in violation of the Constitution
Government
schools that don’t educate but do indoctrinate
students to believe in a socialist, secular world
view
One after another of
America’s major institutions are rocked with
scandals and corruption, and are under attack
Big business
Unions
The legal
profession
Main stream media
The education
establishment
Sports
Organized
religion
And the worst of
all, our government
Democrat and
Republican politicians have failed America.
Many members of
Congress are responsible for the current financial
crisis, and should be investigated, placed under
oath and made to testify publicly, forced to
disgorge money they received from Fannie Mae and
Freddie Mac and other bankrupt financial
corporations.
For years, while
Fannie and Freddie and other financial institutions
were buying favor and cover on the Hill through
campaign contributions and making multimillionaires
out of politicians and their friends, few people
cared, because they didn’t see how it could affect
them. Now they know. Now the American public should
demand that politicians like Chris Dodd, Barney
Frank, and Chuck Schumer explain why they protected
these house of cards institutions, under penalties
of perjury.
Where’s the outrage
from the politicians, where’s their calls for
investigations, where’s their press releases, their
press conferences?
When the Enron and
World Com scandals broke a few years ago, daily we
saw and heard from Washington politicians like Chris
Dodd, Barney Frank, Chuck Schumer and many
others. Where are their voices today?
There seems to be a
conspiracy of silence among Republican and
Democratic politicians to protect their friends and
colleagues in Congress and at Fannie Mae, Freddie
Mac, Lehman Brothers, etc.
Almost daily we read
about another politician at the federal, state or
local level being forced to resign because of a
scandal or a crime.
Power has corrupted
Republicans and Democrats. And absolute power
corrupted the Republicans absolutely when they had
all power during most of the Bush
administration. And if Obama wins the White House
and Congress this November we can count on the
Democrats becoming absolutely corrupt.
In the case of
Republicans, they became that which they beheld.
In the late 1980s and
the early 1990s, Republicans beheld the corruption
of the Democrats and their abuse of power.
Republicans promised
to change things, and the people voted the Democrats
out, and the Republicans in. But soon, the GOP
became corrupt. Soon, the Republican majority in
Congress was abusing power just like Democrats. And
the Republicans became that which they beheld.
In the late 1950s, as
chairman of the Young Republicans in Harris County
(Houston) Texas, I would hear the party leaders talk
about
·
Government being too big,
·
Government spending too much money,
·
About how we must shrink government programs,
and abolish this or that government agency
Government, they
said, was the problem, not the solution.
And that sounded
right to me; it sounded good to me.
And I continued to
hear that in the 1960s, '70s, '80s, '90s from
Republicans at all levels of government.
But all that talk
stopped in January 2001 when the Republicans took
the White House, and held the Senate and the House
of Representatives.
You could almost hear
Tom DeLay, Denny Hastert, Trent Lott, Karl Rove,
George W. Bush and friends say:
·
“Just kidding.”
·
“We didn’t mean it.”
You could almost hear
them say, “What we meant was that we didn’t
want the Democrats spending the money -- but
now that we can spend the money any way we
want, lets blow the doors off the bank vault and
spend and spend and get re-elected and re-elected.”
I can visualize a
meeting in Karl Rove’s White House office in January
2001 with the Republican leadership to decide on a
governing strategy and someone coming up with the
idea of a one-word governing idea:
BRIBERY… as in “Let’s
bribe the voters.”
…as in “You the
voters have the votes…. We the Republicans
have the taxpayers’ money…. Let’s talk. Let’s
make a deal.”
In recent years, many
Republicans in campaigning against Democrats told
the voters they wanted to come to Washington or
their state capitol to clean out the cesspool and
voters believed them and elected them, and within a
few years most sent a message to the voters – I made
a mistake – this is not a cesspool, it’s a hot tub.
In the big picture,
the corruption of Jack Abramoff, Duke Cunningham,
Bob Ney, and others is not a serious
problem. They’ve been caught and punished and their
illegal activities will not affect your children or
grandchildren one iota.
However, what will
seriously threaten the quality of life for our
children and grandchildren is the Republicans’
legal theft, or, as Frederic Bastiat might say,
the legal plunder by President Bush and
Congressional Republicans.
They tried to bribe
the voters with trillions of dollars of your
children’s inheritance.
- They tried to
bribe the people of faith with the Faith Based
Initiative
The Republicans
bribed the farmers with the largest farm subsidies
in American history (and in 2008 they are doing it
again)
They bribed the
Midwest steel workers by putting a tariff on steel
imports
They bribed
seniors with a $7 trillion prescription drug bill
They bribed the
entire state of Florida with money to repair homes
in areas where no one would build unless someone else was paying for hurricane damage
All of this was done
for the sole purpose – the immoral and corrupt
purpose – of holding onto power.
And how appropriate
that it has turned to ashes in their mouths.
Today we have
Republican leaders in the White House and the
Congress who have moved left and abandoned the base
of their party – the conservatives.
And because
Republican leaders moved left, they allowed the
Democratic Party to move even further to the
left. Witness: Obama-Biden, the most liberal
presidential ticket ever; San Francisco Nancy Pelosi
as Speaker of the House; Harry Reid, who’s moved
even further left since becoming Majority Leader of
the Senate, and the vitriolic DNC, which sounds more
and more like a branch of MoveOn.org.
Yes, we can blame
Republican leaders for all this. Reagan forced the
Democratic Party to move to the right. Recent
Republican leaders fostered a Saul Alinsky-type for
President.
A few years ago I
wrote a book Conservatives Betrayed, How George
W. Bush and Other Big Government Republicans
Hijacked the Conservative Cause. If I were
writing the sub-title today I’d probably write “How
George W. Bush and Other Big Government Republicans
Set the Conservative Cause Back 10-20 years.”
Here’s a message to
faithful and loyal conservative Republican
activists: most Republican politicians are
clueless.
Think about it. If
you were on the board of a company whose leaders had
wrecked your brand, blown through your money, lost a
huge amount of your market share, and refused to
change, no matter how bad things got – wouldn’t you
try to get them fired? Not if you’re a Republican
politician!
What can you say
about a political party whose leaders were silent
when a Senator under Federal investigation, Ted
Stevens from Alaska, threatened to resign if he
didn’t get $223 million dollars to build a bridge to
nowhere?
The Republican
Senators’ silence in the face of Stevens’s threat
speaks volumes about the state of the Grand Old
Party.
Voters know
politicians lie to win office.
Then they write laws
to keep themselves in office and hold onto power.
They abuse their
power to help themselves and their friends.
So how do we change
things?
How do we take charge
of our own political future?
How do we reclaim
America for ourselves and future generations?
We all know that one
definition of insanity is: repeating the same
behavior and expecting different results.
In my opinion, the
number one mistake conservatives made in the last
25+ years is that they became an arm of the
Republican Party. Conservatives became an appendage
of the GOP.
Too many conservative
leaders drank the Republican Kool-aid.
However it’s not just
Republicans who have failed Americans but Democrats
bear even more responsibility than Republicans for
the mess we’re in. Everything the Republicans did
between 2000 and 2008, they copied from the
Democrats, who had held power since the 1930s. And
both major parties have worked together to design a
rigged, crooked game that keeps them in power, keeps
competitors out, and forces the rest of us to accept
their dishonest game.
Most politicians take
our money, use us as volunteers, campaign on issues
they know will appeal to us – then once in office
promptly forget us and ignore us until the next
election.
America needs new,
principled leadership – mostly younger leadership –
leadership uncorrupted by the system, and
independent of the system.
Ladies and gentlemen,
it’s time to go off defense and on offense. At every
level in most of America’s major institutions, it’s
time to bring forth new leaders who are unfettered
by ties to the people who have created our problems.
Today this country
has a major vacuum of principled leadership.
In 2008, Americans
are like the Biblical Jews who had to wander the
desert for 40 years before they could get to the
Promised Land. They had to wait until a generation
of corrupt or faithless leaders passed from the
scene.
And America will
continue to wander, to careen from one crisis to
another, until these leaders are replaced.
Power is addictive –
so we can not wait for the failed leaders to resign
– to leave voluntarily. They will have to be forced
out -- sometimes by the voters, sometimes by
stockholders, by donors, by us consumers, by our
friends, our relatives, or co-workers, by angry
Americans.
Today, conservatives
and all who love liberty and freedom have a major
opportunity to provide new and principled leadership
for America.
But it won’t happen
just because we are correct on the issues.
Virtue will not
be its own reward in this case.
There is no
guarantee
America will turn to conservatives for ideas, for
new leadership.
People follow those
who have energy and passion – those
·
who have a plan,
·
who have ideas,
·
who have a vision that people can believe in,
and
·
who communicate their plan, and ideas,
and vision in a way that people can understand.
In the fall of 2008,
Americans are uneasy. They are looking for new
political leadership.
And when I speak of
leadership, I’m not talking just about heads
of organizations, candidates or political activists.
I’m talking about YOU
and YOU and YOU
Leadership begins
with each of us.
Because of the new
and alternative media, the average American can
become an important force in America – a force
outside the so-called “major parties”.
The Left has had
enormous success operating as a Third Force.
Liberals have
thousands of so-called “environmental,”
“consumer,” “civil rights,” and “feminist”
organizations, and thousands of labor union locals.
They all operate
independently of the Democratic and Republican
parties except when they are dictating to the
Democratic and Republican parties. They have their
own membership, money, and agenda.
They pull the public
policy debate to the Left because they are bold and
outspoken, but certainly not because they are
correct or have better ideas.
Conservatives can do
the same, pulling the debate toward freedom and
liberty. Conservatives have an advantage – our
beliefs are consistent with the Founders – but we
need to be more like the Left by being bold and
outspoken.
We need to start
thousands of new organizations at the national,
state, and local level, dealing with issues of
importance to people. If you don’t want to start an
organization, you can blog and e-mail on these
issues.
Remember: Only a
relatively small number of people are interested in
political parties.
But almost all
Americans are interested in issues that directly
impact their lives and their communities:
Taxes
Home school
rights and –
The public
schools
Healthcare
Second Amendment
rights
Opposition to
so-called “nation-building”
Get out of your
comfort zone!
There’s a country and
a way of life that is under attack.
And if you don’t get
fully engaged, you’ll lose. Because the socialists,
the elitists, those who want to use Big Government
to control your lives – they are fully engaged.
Take up a leadership
role… as a candidate, or volunteering to help
candidates, contributing, blogging, e-mailing,
calling in to talk shows, starting new organizations
in your area or on the Internet.
Enlist your family,
friends, neighbors, co-workers in this battle for
America’s soul and America’s freedom.
Leadership begins
with each one of us.
We have a country to
take back, and the blessings of liberty to defend,
to protect, and to pass on to our children,
grandchildren, and generations unborn.
DO NOT WAIT FOR
ORDERS FROM HEADQUARTERS
MOUNT UP AND RIDE TO
THE SOUND OF THE GUNS

you at the revolution!
