New Email Scam about EFTPS Tax Payments!    Don't Fall for It!

A friend who owns a small non-profit corporation forwarded an email to me and asked me if it is a scam.  Definitely!  The email purported to be from the IRS (although it was never identified) about the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS).  Here is what it says:

Your Federal Tax Payment ID: 01037512 has been rejected.
Return Reason Code R21 - The identification number used in the Company Identification Field is not valid.

Please, check the information and refer to Code R21 to get details about your company payment in transaction contacts section:

In other way forward information to your accountant adviser.
EFTPS:
The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System
PLEASE NOTE: Your tax payment is due regardless of EFTPS online availability. In case of an emergency, you can always make your tax payment by calling the EFTPS.

How do I know it's a scam?

1.  You must register to be in the EFTPS tax payments system.  His company isn't registered.

2.  The system is for federal tax payments, including payroll taxes and income taxes.  He has no employees, is a non-profit so he pays no federal income tax.

3. The language reveals a lack of knowledge of English:  In other way forward information to your accountant adviser.

4. When I get these things, I always go to my browser and try to enter the link directly.  In this case, there was no such link to http://eftps.gov/r21. Remember that the link behind an email may be different from what's showing.

5. I just got one myself, to every email address I have, and I have 6 email addresses.

6. Finally, and most important, the IRS does not initiate taxpayer contacts through email. Please read the IRS article on phishing and email scams for more information and to report a suspicious email.
